This type of Old Time Basement was the kind your parents or grandparents had.  They generally leaked and even would fill with water from time to time.  They were primarily used for more for a safety place in the event of a storm versus usable space. 

The next basement is the Basic Basement.  These basements were used primarily to store foods and other items unable to be stored in the house.  Off the ground of course.  They did still leak a little but generally didn't flood.  These were considered a useful basement but not living space.

Then the Finished Basement came along.  This type of basement was to add more living space to your home and in some cases they are even used as apartments for family. In some cases finished basements can even have a door that leads directly to the outside so it has it own separate entrance.
